Due to the water hammer effect and unreasonable parameters of hydro governors, the ultra-low frequency oscillation (ULFO) is easy to be triggered in power systems when integrated with large hydro generators. In order to alleviate the ULFO, a new optimization method, fast non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to optimize parameters of hydro governors. Advantages of the NSGA-II are analyzed and highlighted by comparing results with those from existing methods. The proposed method is validated based on a 4-machine 2-region system.
