A wideband and robust design of a cavity-backed dipole antenna at D-band for radar altimeter applications is presented. The proposed antenna is based on a planar multilayer arrangement using standard PCB technology which enables the seamless integration into a affordable millimeter wave sensor system. The antenna performance has been investigated by full wave simulations and validated by the fabrication and measurement of the antenna prototype. The experimental results of the realized antenna element show excellent agreement with the simulated values. The dipole antenna covers a 10dB impedance bandwidth from 119GHz to 126.6GHz and achieves a maximum gain of 6.9dBi. The measured 3D radiation patterns at various frequencies across the operational band are provided.
