A trapped oil model of a gear pump with relief groove is given and its performance is simulated. First, the main geometrical parameters are confirmed. Furthermore, the three-dimensional model of the gear pump is completed by CAD. Then, the trapped oil model is established by analyzing the process of gear pump oil trapping, where the trapped oil flow and volume are calculated and the basic quantity is solved. Finally, the performances for different leakages are simulated by using the trapped oil model. The results show that the gear pump’s axial clearance leakage, meshing leakage, side clearance leakage and unloading leakage are all reproduced, which is consistent with expectations. The obtained conclusions have a certain engineering practical significance for the design and simulation research of high-performance gear pumps.
