Moving Target Detection in Foliage Environment using FMCW Radar

In this work the target moving in the foliage environment is detected. Here the target is detected by two methods. One method is by identifying the frequency peak present in the Fourier Transform of the mixer output and the other method is by considering the mixer output in spatial frequency domain, farther the target more is the spatial frequency, and the target detection and its range is determined by Inverse Fourier Transform of Mixer output and Range Time Intensity (RTI)plotting. For this, a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Radar system is designed, with required Radio Frequency (RF) subsystems and signal processing unit. For designing RF section off the shelf RF components are used. A four Channel analog to digital converter (ADC) is used for analog to digital conversion and data acquisition. To get the target information from the received signal, signal processing is done in MATLAB. To get moving target information from the received signal Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) is used. A target with known Radar Cross- section (RCS) is considered and the system is calibrated accordingly.
