Most building codes around the world have specific minimum requirements for both airborne and impact sound isolation at demising walls and floor floor-ceiling assemblies assemblies. However, for the Many projects that are marketed as “higher quality, quality,” the residents will often expect sound isolation exceeding the minimum requirements. For these projects, the acoustical consultant, developer, and architect establish sound I isolation criteria appropriate for the quality level of the solation project. The need for some projects to achieve greater sound isolation than code code-minimum has been recognized in the industry since the middle of the 20 20th th century. As multi multi-family housing has become more prevalent and residents have become more sensitive to noise noise, various private consulting firms and governmental agencies have developed and refined “industry standards” for various quality levels of housing. Not all groups have come to the same specific conclusions, but there is a general philosophical agreement. This paper presents a discussion of both the history of this issue and the range of standards used.
