Unique Partnership Opportunities to Increase Recycled Water Demand in Coastal Los Angeles County

Southern California water providers, who rely heavily on imported water, face continual challenges to water supply availability and reliability. Climate change, population growth, prolonged droughts, and the need to protect endangered species have all at times contributed to water scarcity in southern California. Complicating these issues is the fact that California is earthquake prone, with a major active fault crossing the three main aqueducts that import potable water. West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin), a public agency providing wholesale imported and recycled water to almost 1 million customers, responded to water supply reliability challenges by developing a unique world-class water recycling program involving multiple stakeholders. The partnerships that West Basin established over the last 30 years have been crucial to the delivery of approximately 40 million gallons per day (MGD) of designer recycled water, serving public agencies, private entities, and local communities in southwest Los Angeles County.
