Wastewater Disinfection - The Smart Way

Performic acid (PFA) is an oxidant used for disinfection in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). PFA does not produce by-products and does not increase biological or chemical oxygen demand, it disinfects quickly and subsequently degrades to carbon dioxide and water. The efficacy of PFA was tested in batch experiments during a twelve-week study performed at two WWTP locations in North America. PFA was dosed twice per week using three concentrations (1,2, and 10 mg/L) with two distinct contact-times (5 and 30 minutes). The two plants differed in treatment processes, and influent quality. The study results confirm that PFA is a highly effective disinfectant for wastewater, consistent with previous studies performed in Europe. PFA is not for sale in North America but is the subject of ongoing studies for biocide registration purposes.
