Setting the Foundational Blocks for Smart Water Infrastructure at DC Water

DC Water sees smart water infrastructure as an essential component to optimally manage its water and sewer networks. To begin the digital transformation of its systems, the Water and Sewer Sensor Program (WaSSP) was launched in 2017. WaSSP includes numerous water distribution, water quality, sewer collection, and hydraulic modeling objectives. A detailed roadmap was created as part of the program charter. This established a series of building blocks to evaluate technologies, build smart infrastructure foundations, and expand system management understanding and capabilities to achieve multiple primary program, realtime, and analytical management goals. Employing the roadmap as a holistic framework for system transformation, the program management team coordinated parallel projects covering pressure transient detection and notification, operating pressure monitoring, residual chlorine measurement, and hydraulic model calibration. Within these subprojects, foundational blocks were established related to remote sensor deployment, data delivery and management, systems integration, and real-time monitoring and modeling.
