The DC Water (DCW) Blue Plains advanced wastewater treatment plant (Blue Plains AWTP) implemented a sidestream deammonification (DEMON) process to treat the high ammonia belt filter press (BFP) filtrate generated from the solid's thermal hydrolysis and digestion process. As the largest of its kind, DCW faced several challenges during construction and commissioning, such as: complex contract structure, large basin size requiring significant quantity of anammox seed, delayed initial seeding, operation in several modes during ramp up, and some operational challenges including presence of inhibitory compounds in the filtrate. Despite these challenges, the commissioning team developed several solutions and performance testing of five basins operating in parallel resulted in 86% ammonia removal and 81% total nitrogen removal.
