Offsetting the Demand for Potable Water in Minnesota: Stormwater Reuse at Chanhassen High School

Riley-Purgatory-Bluff Creek Watershed District (RPBCWD) in partnership with the City of Chanhassen, Minnesota conducted a feasibility study of stormwater reuse for irrigation at Chanhassen High School (Independenf School District (ISD) 112) in 2015-2016. The project proposed to use water from an existing stormwater pond on the high school campus for irrigation of the entire campus, including the school's athletic fields, with the goals to reduce groundwater consumption, reduce discharge rates, volumes and pollutants to Bluff Creek (a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) impaired water), and increase the public awareness of stormwater reuse and groundwater conservation. In 2016, the RPBCWD obtained grant funds from the Metropolitan Council for the implementation of the stormwater reuse project at Chanhassen High School. In 2016-2017, the RPBCWD worked with the City of Chanhassen and ISD112 staff on the final design and construction of the stormwater reuse system at Chanhassen High School occurred during the summer and fall of 2018. Although the system was started in the fall of 2018, the operation during 2019 will be the first year of full operation.
