IPC™ membranes are fully back washable flat sheet membranes that can be installed in existing as well as in new MBRs (IPC stands for Integrated Permeate Channel). The individual flat sheets are placed in modules that are aerated at the bottom to induce cleaning by bubbles. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used as a virtual design tool to test different membrane module designs. Shear distributions across the module, and over each individual membrane sheet were quantified using CFD. The aerator design was then altered virtually, and more homogeneous shear was obtained.
