The 3D knitted spacer fabric shows superior mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus, tensile strength and flexibility, and equivalent moisture management performance compared to the current GranuFoam® dressing. This means that a textile spacer fabric will provide improved functionality and direct contact with wounds on small digits and extremities compared to the current foam product when used for vacuum assisted wound closure (VAC) therapy. Further, the addition of a chitosan coating to the spacer fabric's surface will reduce the risk of infection as evidenced by significant bacterial reductions toward S. aureus and E. coli.
