Nanoscale selenium surface functionalization has demonstrated antibacterial efficacy along clinical surfaces in vitro. Future studies will focus on elucidating the mechanism of antibacterial activity, assessing mammalian cell biocompatibility, determining antibacterial efficacy under biofouling conditions, and investigating the general mechanical properties of diverse selenium nanoparticle functionalized composites.
