Many high efficiency solar cell concept require materials that can support several quasi-Fermi level separations. Using thermodynamic arguments we discuss the material requirements for this family of related high efficiency concepts, down-conversion, up-conversion, carrier multiplication, Auger assisted solar cells and intermediate band solar cells. By explicitly including the effects of non-idealities in calculations of IV characteristics and efficiencies we identify experimental signatures of promising materials. We also focus on similarities and differences in material requirements for the related concepts.
