HARNESSING INNOVATION AND THE ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT BODY OF KNOWLEDGE

This is a reporting of the second of three phases of research conducted on the relevancy and use of the engineering management body of knowledge (EMBOK). The first phase, reported at the 2013 International Conference on Engineering Management, was an attempt to determine the awareness and use of EMBOK among 500 engineering managers located in the US, Brazil and North Western Europe. This paper reports on the first part of the second phase of the study, which is a meta case study analysis of fifty two university researchers' effort to create and commercialize intellectual properties through technology transfer. Research questions addressed included: "Philosophy: How do researchers successfully match the passion of the academic effort with the relevant needs of Society?"; "Infrastructure: What resources do the researchers list as critical to their work?"; "Tools/Techniques/Technology: What skill sets do the researchers self-identify?"; "How do these findings on the EMBOK compare to traditional technology transfer models?" An attempt to identify gaps and suggested remediation are given.
