UNIONS: BACKGROUND AND TRENDS WITHIN THE U.S.

Unions have played an important role in the history of industrial development within the United States. Their fundamental role has been that of bargaining with management over three main issues: wages, hours of employment, and conditions of employment. This paper provides an overview of the union movement within the U.S. Basic trends of union participation are presented along with important milestones throughout the past century. The changing influence of unions in the private sector is contrasted with growing union strength in the public sector. Also, basic argument (for and against) the role of unions in today's globalized, competitive marketplace are presented. The role of the union in today's competitive environment is important. Executives, managers, engineers, and students should benefit from the insights provided in this study.
