The Port of Hueneme, located in California between the Ports of Los Angeles and San Francisco, is undergoing a wharf strengthening and deepening project at Berths 1 and 2 for their 1970s era break bulk wharf. The objective of the project is to expand the port's ability to handle additional cargo with the same number of vessel calls, or fewer vessel calls, and to reduce the wait times of heavy-loaded Champion class tankers that must otherwise wait for high tides to enter the port. The wharf will be strengthened to restore the original capacity of the wharf and provide deepening from -35 ft (MLLW) to -40 ft (MLLW) through the installation of a steel sheet pile wall and dredging; and the mooring and fendering systems will be upgraded to accommodate the larger vessels. This paper will provide a project overview of the upgrade and deepening project and the phasing of such a project for construction and the challenges associated with keeping the tenants operational while construction is progressing.
