For the stability and reliability of the electricity system, the diagnostic tests of high-voltage equipment are of utmost importance. Partial discharges often precede major failures, which can be prevented by detecting and locating these discharges in time. While standardized methods are used for the detection of partial discharges, there are no generally used techniques for the approximation of their spatial position, despite the potential economic benefits of using such methods. This paper focuses on the comparison of iterative and non-iterative location approximation algorithms that process the captured emitted electromagnetic pulses of the discharges. The aim of the research is to find the most suitable location approximation method for a measuring and signal processing system that could be applied during the factory acceptance tests of high voltage equipment.
