Grocery shopping is considered a task-oriented and rather unexciting activity. However, the experiential potential of grocery stores is still not fully exploited. The introduction of in-store technologies, such as smart shopping carts, caters to changing customer behavior. Through an experiment in a demo grocery store (N = 60), this study investigates the hedonic and utilitarian shopping value of a context-aware shopping list and its perceived quality. The results demonstrated that using a context-aware shopping list results in higher hedonic and utilitarian value compared to shopping with a paper shopping list. This study also sought to determine whether system latency impacts product quality perception of the smart shopping cart. Product quality perception did not differ significantly by level of system latency. These insights imply that the investment in in-store technologies is valuable as it results in real-time gratification. Since participants were not bothered with the system latency, more transmission time could be dedicated to error correction or more data could be transmitted at a higher bit rate.
