A low-profile wideband mushroom antenna based on negative-order resonance (NOR), zeroth-order resonance (ZOR) and positive-order resonance (POR) modes is proposed for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. It consists of a circular patch with a set of conductive vias and two circles of mushroom units. The proposed antenna has a low-profile of 0.024 λ00 is the free space wavelength) at 4.77 GHz. With the NOR, ZOR and POR modes, the antenna obtains an impedance bandwidth (|S11| <; -10 dB) of 34.5% (from 4.77 GHz to 6.76 GHz) and has a stable radiation gain. With the conical beam in E-plane and the omnidirectional pattern in H-plane, the antenna is a good candidate for large metallic UAV applications.
