This paper presents an effective method for transmission expansion planning (TEP) in a pool-based competitive electricity market. For this, a social welfare function (SWF) is maximized for the nonlinear optimization problem of TEP, subject to security and power flow operational constraints. The social welfare function compromises the benefit of consumers and real power generation costs. The adaptable candidate lines are obtained fit for several perspective scenarios of future demand. Later, the objective function of the formulated problem compared with the annual investment cost of the forthcoming transmission line. The relative performance of each available line is assessed by the application of Multi-criteria Data Envelopment Analysis (MCDEA) and considers the most efficient adaptable line for the TEP. The proposed method is tested on Garver’s six-bus system to demonstrate the expansion study.
