Control System Design for a 400W Micro Wind Turbine for DC Loads Applications

Due to the higher cost and inefficiency in actual electricity generation, researchers are exploring the idea of joining the small variable natural energy sources with storage capability and controllable loads in intelligent grids as microgrids. These grids help increase power quality and are known by their reliability and efficiency. Micro-wind turbines are one of the most commonly used in microgrids due to its efficient power generation and are emerging as one of the most up and coming technologies in the energy system field. To ensure the safety of these systems and proper grid integration, a control system must be implemented to guarantee that the wind turbine is adequate for operation. This paper presents the testing results of a proposed control system for a 400W micro-wind turbine. Experimental setup and testing procedures are explained in detail. Results demonstrate that this micro-wind turbine could be located on low wind speed environments and can be used to power low DC voltage appliances.
