This paper studies the performance of polar code in DP-16QAM coherent optical communication system. Three typical construction methods of polar code are compared and analyzed: Bhattacharyya parameters construction, Gauss approximation construction and Monte-Carlo construction. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the three methods under different design signal-to-noise ratios (design-SNRs) is analyzed. A multi-level polar coding method DP-MLC which combined the two polarization of DP-16QAM is proposed. The BER performance of the proposed method is compared with the traditional BICM system. The simulation result shows that the performance of the three methods is different under different design-SNRs. The Monte Carlo method is the best among all the construction methods when the design-SNR is 1.5dB. The proposed DP-MLC is better than the traditional BICM system. Under the same conditions, the average optical signal-to-noise ratio is saved by 0.5dB.
