A novel high-voltage and large-capacity reactive power compensator based on magnetic-controlled switch (MCS) is proposed, according to the present situation of reactive power compensation in high-voltage distribution network. MSC is either "on" or "off", implementing the dynamic switch of compensation capacitors, while the transformer is either short-circuited or open-circuited by turning on or turning off the triacs. In order to improve the voltage and power ratings, the multi-winding transformer is employed. In this paper, the characteristic of compensation and no-load and special case about large-capacity MCS is analyzed theoretically. A rated 35kV, 2100kVA prototype is developed and the experimental results verify the advantages of the compensator such as small transient inrush, high reliability and low loss.
