Comparative Analysis of Mesh and Star Topologies in Improving Smart Fire Alarms

Information and Communication Technology is rapidly growing over time, an example is the advancement of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology used to design Fire Alarm systems in a building. The impact result of a building caught on fire can be detrimental to the building occupants, for example the loss of building and property. To prevent the occurrence of fire problems, a system that can notify quickly if the building is detected on fire is required. It is required that the fire alarm system serves as an early warning system. To create such system, the workings of the fire alarm system will be made by using sensor data, which results will be displayed in the android phone in order to know the temperature, light and gas pressure in the room. Based on these requirements, this paper proposes a fire alarm system, using WSN, with Mesh Topology. Mesh Topology is interesting because it's fault tolerance nature. To examine the performance of the Mesh Topology, a comparison with Star Topology is provided. Based on the results of research on fire alarm system using Mesh topology produces sensor data with lower delay, packet loss and power consumption compared to Star Topology.
