Cognitive radio networks utilize the available spectrum resource by spectrum sensing mechanisms and coordinate other users to perform spectrum access efficiently. These are the important functions of the medium access control (MAC) protocols. However, several challenges are associated with cognitive MAC protocols. Hence it is very difficult to support seamless communications, especially in CR cellular networks by CR MAC protocols. This paper has proposed cooperative sharing based inter and intra cellular network architecture. To support seamless communication, a modified MAC protocol has been proposed. A mathematical model has developed to justify the proposed scheme. A comparative study with conventional protocols has been analyzed graphically in terms of throughput and overall system efficiency.
