Metal melt filtration plays an important role to improve cast product purity due to the removal of endogenous and exogenous inclusions like oxides. During filtration, the inclusions can attach on the filter surface if they come close to the surface and adhesion forces surpass viscous and inertial forces , A better understanding of the interaction mechanisms and thus an optimization of the filter itself are the aims of the subproject B01 in the CRC920. Therefore AFM and a water-based filtration plant was used.
