Industry Examples of Coagulation/Flocculation

Examples of how coagulation and flocculation have been used to effectively treat solids at industrial wastewater facilities are presented. First, an example of influent solids removal being enhanced with the use of chemicals in the organic chemicals industry. A latex plant with influent suspended solids in the 400 to 800 mg/L range successfully applied metal salts and polymer to remove solids to less than 20 mg/L; thereby, reducing the aerobic treatment capacity required for direct discharge. Second, a pretreatment example of a metal plating operation using inorganic salts and polymer to remove chelated metals from its discharge. The primary target metal, zinc, was reduced from the 20 mg/L range to an average of 0.6 mg/L using a cocktail of metal salts and polymer. And finally, a pretreatment example of removing oil emulsions via coagulation from a Tier 1 automotive industry effluent prior to discharge.
