Coagulation and flocculation are unit processes that are critical for many of the treatment processes at use at wastewater treatment. Chemical addition can be necessary for a number of applications like chemically enhanced primary treatment and turbidity reduction for water reuse systems. Chemical addition, coagulation and flocculation when done correctly can significantly improve the removal of solids and bacteria at resource recovery facilities (RRF). An overview will be provided of typical coagulation and flocculation application used in the municipal wastewater market. This will serve as a baseline with a discussion on how these unit processes can be improved. Three case studies will be provided to add the importance of coagulation and flocculation. Case Study A - Addition of polymer to improve secondary solids capture. Case Study B - Addition of polymer upstream of filtration for water reuse application Case Study C - Addition of Iron at a Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment facility. Each study will examine the existing coagulation and flocculation used and illustrate how improvements could be made to improve the efficiency of each process.
