Real Time Operations of a Complex Sewer System

The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSDGC) has developed a Watershed Operations Division to manage their wet weather infrastructure and remote monitoring assets implemented throughout their collection system. Their existing wet weather infrastructure includes combined sewer overflows (CSOs), sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), pump station overflows (PSOs), real-time control facilities (RTCs), and storage/treatment facilities (STFs). To enable the management of these assets, MSDGC uses a cloud-based supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that is dedicated to wet weather operations. There are level sensors and flow monitors installed throughout the collection system including at each of the overflow locations and local programmable logic controllers (PLCs) at each of the facilities that are all integrated into this SCADA system. The SCADA system allows MSDGC to not only view sensor and other equipment data in real-time, but it is being used to monitor the quality of the sensor data coming in, evaluate the readiness and performance at the facilities, and perform other functions such as automated reporting of overflow occurrences and volumes. MSDGC continues to integrate additional assets into the SCADA system and develop capabilities for the use of realtime data to assist in the execution of routine operational tasks as well as more complex optimization of the collection system and its remote facilities.
