Advancement in digital elevation data and processing application tools are used to achieve a high resolution urban stormwater planning model that improves planning quality at reduced cost. Until this decade, detailed stormwater management models were hindered with lack of quality digital data and the excessive effort required to digitize surface condition. Recently, detailed resolution data are more available and can be used to replace aggregated parameters with a more accurate and automated digital measurements that enhance the flow prediction and provide robust foundation for planning and managing stormwater improvements. In recent years, City of Columbus processed digital elevation model (DEM) data in 2.5ft by 2.5ft resolution within its facility plan area. The vertical accuracy for this DEM data is within 2 inches. This high level of DEM data has been used to assist City's ongoing Blueprint Program to alleviate field survey necessity. The objective of this study is to understand the benefits of using advanced Digital Terrain Data to improve the Stormwater modeling reliability. Columbus Blueprint Stormwater Modeling is used as a case study in this presentation. The enhanced Stormwater model agrees well with flow meter data with no calibration efforts involved. Using advanced Digital Terrain Data can improve the Stormwater modeling reliability. The enhanced Stormwater model is appropriate for Green Infrastructure planning to meet water quality, water quantity, and stormwater drainage compliance.
