Alternate mechanisms to control struvite in lieu of using ferric chloride was explored. Use of magnesium hydroxide to induce controlled struvite precipitation was tested on anaerobically digested biosolids and significant benefits were documented such as lower dosage compared to ferric chloride for optimized phosphate precipitation leading to better struvite control and savings in chemical usage, increased availability of alkalinity for downstream processes, and higher percent solids resulting in drier cake providing substantial savings in haulage cost.
