The F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center is Gwinnett County's largest and most advanced wastewater treatment facility with a capacity of 60 million gallons per day on a maximum monthly basis. The treatment plant utilizes enhanced biological phosphorus removal and chemical polishing upstream of tertiary membrane filtration to meet a stringent effluent total phosphorus discharge limit of 0.08 milligrams per liter. Use of ferric chloride as a coagulant has led to severe fouling of the submerged Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. This study focuses on an investigation of alternate membrane chemical cleaning protocol in place of less effective manufacturer-recommended citric-acid clean to improve performance of membrane filtration process.
