The basin-type insulators in GIS play an important role in supporting conductors, isolating the air chamber and electrical insulation. However, in practice, the internal flanging grading ring forms a semi-closed cavity, which hinders the flow of epoxy resin, easily generates bubbles and defect inside, and increases the defective rate of the products. In order to design the structure of the basin-type insulator without the internal grading ring, we use MATLAB to call COMSOL to simulate based on genetic algorithm. Both the electric field distribution and mechanical stress distribution of optimized design meet the requirements.
