1. According to the significant increase of light gases and heavy products for coke, the behavior of the volatiles' reaction was intensified after 650 °C during pyrolysis of Naomaohu coal. 2. The products distributions were similar in two pyrolysis reactors, but the change tend of these was more significant in the downer-bed reactor due to intensified volatiles' reactions, especially that of coke. 3. The reaction degree between char and volatiles could been shown by the radical concentration of char. 4. The higher radical concentration existed in coke than that in char because the precursor of coke was volatiles with higher active components than that of char 5. With the increase of heating rate, the tar yield increased, but the behavior of coking was intensified significantly owing to larger temperature gradient of the solid and the gas phase.
