This study evaluated the surface performance of DI when exposed to different individual and synergistic factors present in the oral environment. Insertion test in low density bone simulating material did not result in any significant damage to the surface in terms of electrochemical behavior and wear. While surface discoloration was evident in implants immersed in early colonizers, early-, and late- failed retrievals, oxide layer thinning was found in implants immersed in late colonizers and retrievals. Surface performance is vital to the effective functioning of DI. Hence, surface should be evaluated with respect to the in vivo conditions.
