Dicationic imidazolium-based IL with phenylalanine as the anion formed thin-film coatings on common biomedical alloys and ceramics but weakly interacted with UHMWPE. This IL formulation is a promising candidate to coat and impart its multifunctional behavior (anti-microbial activity, corrosion inhibition, and lubrication) on biomaterials that possess an oxide layer. Improving the surface properties of biomaterials by coating with IL can enhance their performance in vivo.
