We successfully synthesized a new pH responsive self-assembling peptide hydrogel. This is the first reported pentapeptide sequence that does not require any protection groups such as acetyl. t-butyloxycarbonyl6, or other large aromatic groups. These compounds are often used to drive self-assembly due to the abundant n -n stacking interactions between the aromatic groups. This simplifies the synthesis process and greatly reduces the cost of materials. SAPPH can be facilely prepared at modest concentrations of 3% by weight, thereby allowing them to be applied to a broad range of neural tissue engineering applications.
