From these observed results, one can conclude that the crosslinked collagen yarns are able to retain their mechanical strength for up to six weeks. As a result, it is necessary to include a synthetic component in the patch graft so as to maintain the mechanical function of the repaired tendon until tissue regeneration has progressed. The low crosslinked yarn has sufficient mechanical strength to function as a rotator cuff patch. The crosslinked yarns are being plied with PLA multi-filaments to make hybrid yarns for weaving into a patch graft. The mechanical performance of the composite patch will be compared to that of a natural tendon. In vitro cell biocompatibility and cell proliferation will be evaluated to determine whether the presence of the collagen component can improve the biological performance of the patch graft.
