The osteoinductive potential of a bone-like scaffold with drug-eluting microsphere was investigated. Preliminary data shows the GW9662 eluting microspheres upregulated the expression of two matrix proteins and could potentially replace a more traditional drug treatment regimen (10 μM GW9962). In addition, expression of BMP2 shows that mimicking the composition and microstructure of native bone tissue can actively induce hMSCs toward the osteogenic lineage. Future work will include performing qRT-PCR after 21 days of culture and analyzing additional osteogenic markers (e.g. RUNX2).
