These are the first studies to demonstrate the combination of graphene modified to release Ca~(2+) and PO_4~(3-) ions as a new osteoinductive matrix for bone regeneration. The combination of GO and Ca~(2+) through CaPG, in the presence of donor BMSCs, produced histology similar to that of GO delivery with bone morphogenetic proteins. The use of simple signaling molecules in combination with GO presents exciting possibilities for tissue regeneration.
