The chitosan-based hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical and biological properties for bioprinting and cell survival. Future work includes adding type-Ill collagen fibrils to increase cell adhesion and proliferation as well as tuning the mechanical properties of the hydrogel to mimic the multi-layered structure of the VF lamina propria. The chitosan-based hydrogel shows a high potential for bioprinting in vitro 3D VF grafts, which yields possibility in rapidly manufacturing patient-customized vocal tissue replacements.
