The newly synthesized methoxy-containing adhesives provided acute and delayed buffering. Leaching from methoxy-containing copolymers was significantly reduced. The sol-gel reaction provided a chronic and persistent reaction in wet conditions-performance that offers promise for maintaining the integrity of the hybrid network under conditions relevant to the oral environment. The promising results provide a design strategy for developing biocompatible dental adhesives that will increase the functional lifetime of composite restorations by providing a durable seal at the composite/tooth margin and buffering pH to reduce the outgrowth of cariogenic bacteria.
