This paper proposes a novel switching strategy for a Z-source inverter, which has unequal short-through periods to reduce current ripple in the inductors of its impedance source. This proposed method can reduce the inductor current ripple by 26.9% than a conventional method, which has an equal short-through interval, without increasing number of the switching of the inverter. The proposed method and the ripple reduction were confirmed in experiments with an 1 kW laboratory prototype. The experimental results agreed well with calculated results, and it was confirmed that the proposed method does not increase loss of the circuit.
