Fast turbine valving is a recognised method for enhancing a power system stability during large transients. It is perceived as an attractive alternative to presently utilized methods like FACTS, resistor breakers and emergency turbine shut down. Its main principle is to limit steam flow into a turbine enhanced with the fast valving capability effectively in order to reduce the mechanical power output of the turbine during an identified transient, for instance a three phase short circuit near the power plant. This paper presents interim results on fast valving study carried out on the basis of the Polish power system with the use of mathematical modelling and computer simulation. The study is conducted in order to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of fast turbine valving implantation into a European power system as the means of enhancing the power system stability. The novelty of the study comprises the use of an online steam turbine simulator incorporating a functional Electro-hydraulic Turbine Regulator utilized by an actual power plant working within a regional power grid.
