This paper presents an inexpensive custom designed ultrawideband (UWB) radar for high-resolution applications. The transmitted signal is a mono-pulse with 110ps pulse-width and 6Vp-p amplitude. The UWB receiver is developed based on the time expansion method. A strobe pulse, with 85ps pulse-width, is used to sample the periodic RF pulse train at a series of offsets during successive periods. An expansion factor is defined based on the difference in pulse repetition frequencies of the strobe and RF pulses. The expanded reconstructed pulse spectrum is scaled-down according to this factor. The designed portable UWB radar system is suitable for biomedical or industrial applications with high-resolution demands.
