A Review of Road Functional Classification Problems

摘要

The functional classification system groups roads into classes or categories based on the transportation functions of the roads. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the definitions, influencing factors, context and multimodal accommodation, classifications in guidelines and standards, and applications of the road functional classification, which also includes both the highway functional classification and the urban road functional classification. The current trends and gaps in each class of the problem are discussed and future directions in terms of classification design and function quantification is given. This review intends to provide a picture of road functional classification problems, allow comparisons of classifications and applications in various engineering practices, and encourage cross-fertilization between the highway functional classification and the urban road functional classification research.
