1. Rheology of paper coatings is complex and important both as a means to characterize coatings and as a key property which impacts runnability and final coating quality. 2. Key performance attributes include low shear viscosity (Brookfield), high shear viscosity (Hercules & ACAV capillary), viscolelastic properties (oscillatory shear), extensional viscosity (filament stretching) as well as water holding and shear stability. 3. Key factors influencing rheology are solids, particle size, particle shape, particle size distribution and choice of thickeners. 4. Each type of coating process (blade, MSP, curtain) has its own set of rheological parameters that need to be optimized.
