CNF could be tagged with FITC through physical absorption of FITC up to 0.0003 moles of FITC/moles of glucose RU. This adsorption phenomenon provided a straightforward method to fluorescently tag CNF and image its location using fluorescence microscopy that proved useful for CNF paper coatings. CNF bound to the paper fiber surface and penetrated the base sheet at low solids content. As the solids content of the CNF was increased, the CNF penetration into the base paper decreased. At 3.5 wt% solids, CNF no longer penetrated significantly into newsprint, forming a continuous film upon the paper surface.
