As part of the ongoing research on simulation infrastructure for satellite missions, an Earth orbiting satellite simulator (EOSS) is being developed for operator training, validation of operational procedures and maintenance purposes. It also has the purpose of supporting the design and software-in-the-loop tests of on-board and ground station software. This paper describes the satellite simulator architecture, configuration and components including the development approach in detail. EOSS consists of Simulator Core Software (SimCore) and Simulator Control Software (SimCon). SimCore performs functional and interface simulation of satellite equipment as well as simulating the dynamic behaviour of satellite and disturbance effects from space environment. SimCon controls and configures SimCore for different simulation scenarios together with visualization of satellite and space environment data. An iterative approach has been taken by sequentially adding more details to the models at each stage of the satellite project and thus supporting the design and software-in-the-loop tests of on-board and ground station software. In order to accomplish this, EOSS is designed to have the capability of simulating the realistic behavior of the equipment and to have an accurate representation of the spatial information of the satellite.
